What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World
What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World goes in a few different directions. Ranging from serious songs likes The Wrong Year and Make You Better and fun songs like Philomena, but I guess that's why the albums title is so fitting. Things kick off with "The Singer Addresses His Audience" where lead singer Colin Meloy addresses his fans directly. He notes that the band see's you (the fan) and they understand the impact they have on your life and the responsibility that comes along with that. I liked it, although it is different I think it sets an interesting tone for the rest of the record .
Are you a guy? Have you ever been (or currently are) a teenager? Then Philomena is the track for you! Basically this song is about performing sexual deeds for your lady. Meloy sings that all he ever wanted to do is live long enough to see a naked girl.. but then he quickly got bored with that level of access. Aint that the truth? By the way.. I know aint, aint a word. Philomena hits the nail on the head. It shows the internal struggle that is a young mans sex drive.
My Favorite Track
By far my favorite track on this record is Make You Better. My interpretation of this song is that it is about lost love. There is a man and a women. They were in love, something happens and by summer they breakup. Meloy says I can make you better, but if you listen closely it goes much deeper than the surface level interpretation I think a lot of listeners take. He's not singing to a girl and saying come with me, I can make you better... He's desperate, he wants this girl back bad. He has probably told her everything he can to get her back. And now he is desperately trying to convince her that her life would be better with him in it. Pretty deep right? Him making her better is all about his selfish needs.
If nothing else this record is a solid listen so make sure you atleast do that via Spotify. If you feel as strongly about the album as I do then buy a few songs (maybe all of them) on itunes. Incase you forgot I gave What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World a 4 out of 5. So check it out and let us know what you think.
