Imagine Dragons new record Smoke + Mirrors was released a few weeks ago. In an attempt to kick off this post by sounding smart I want to note that the new albums title is a clear nod to the bands home town of Las Vegas (like magicians in Vegas use smoke and mirrors.. get it?). I’m sure this observation has already been made, but it is the first time I am saying it and I’m sure that counts for something… right?
For example the album starts off with Shots (my favorite track on S+M… should have been the lead single!) and then transitions into Gold, which was just bad. I absolutely hated the screeching noise at the beginning of Gold. I would have loved it if it went right into Smoke and Mirrors.. But no.. We got Gold. Can you tell I didn’t like that song?
Imagine Dragons played around with a lot of different sounds on this record, lead singer Dan Reynolds said “There is some weird stuff going on in these songs." And to be honest at times it felt overbearing. I prefer to hear instrumentals over strange sounds and voice manipulations any day of the week. Even I bet my Life (which I enjoyed) was a little all over the place (strange voice stuff, soulful women backup vocals and more might have been a bit much) I found this record so polarizing! Thats why I gave it a 2 out of 3.
Below I listed the entire album, the tracks I could have done without are in red:
3. "Smoke and Mirrors"
4. "I'm So Sorry"
5. "I Bet My Life"
8. "It Comes Back to You"
12. "Hopeless Opus"
13. "The Fall"
