What I'm about to say should not be taken lightly; Magic Man is quickly becoming my favorite band.
Why? Well for starters their debut album "Before The Waves" is Magical. You will have to excuse me for the pun, but it's true. The 12 track synthrock masterpiece is anchored by the hit single "Paris," which has gotten play all over the place, including Sirius-xm's AltNation.
With that being said the records greatness does not stop at "Paris," it's filled with other single worthy tracks like "Texas," "Out of Mind" and "Tonight." So the band has a solid record, but how's their live show? Thanks for asking.
You see to take the spot of my "Favorite Band" you need more than just a great record, that's just the foundation. To be number one you need to put on one hell of a show, and folks I'm here to tell you that's exactly what Magic Man did!
Magic Man kicked off with fan favorite "Texas," which got everyone dancing, including the band. From there the crowd was hooked and the band played off of crowd involvement. The award for coolest moment of the night though goes to the band's performance of "Tonight" when Alex requested that fans turn on their phone lights -- nearly everyone in the jammed packed Fonda Theater complied. I had no idea you could light up a whole room with those LED lights.
Another thing I really appreciated about the band's performance was Alex's secure role as frontman. He sings, and that's all he does. A lot of times you see different members of the band performing several different roles, but Magic Man is a little different.I think this is the secret to their phenomenal live performances. Alex jumps, dances and zips around on stage getting fans juiced. It's as if his key responsibility is to make sure everyone's having a good time, and he is left to do just that.
Magic Man finished their set with "Paris," and it was epic to say the least.
Now, many of you have heard "Paris," on the radio or online, but I have to say, if you haven't heard it live you are missing out. The entire band really puts their heart into it. Toward the end of the song Alex explodes with emotion as he screams "Paris, you know I held on too much." In that moment you can tell how much this song means to the band, and Alex who lived in Paris for some time.
So why is Magic Man my new favorite? They produce great music, they put on a very enthusiastic live show and from our interview with the band, (which can be seen below) you can tell that every single member of the band wants Magic Man to be the best it possibly can be. How can you not fall in love with such a driven and passionate group of people?
