The soothing sounds of Summer Salt matches perfectly with a relaxing summer day. I’m writing this in the winter and it should be illegal since the cold weather is not worthy of these summer sounds. What may be better than their sound is their clever name. Before starting a show, the band introduces themselves as Summer Salt - Summer like the season and salt like the seasoning.
“We definitely tried to drive across the pacific ocean, luckily I had AAA. It’s all about trying to drive Eugene’s Kia Soul across the Pacific Ocean and about 10 feet into it we sunk. Now we’re back here. There’s no other story to that,” Phil says. I’m not sure if the story is true or not (probably not) but it doesn’t matter, they’ve created the perfect beach soundtrack and that’s enough for me.
Their album, Driving To Hawaii, is filled with six summer-sweet songs, my favorite being track four: Driving to Hawaii. The song starts off with actual sound bites of a beach and then a simple guitar riff leads us to Matt’s soft and light voice. Eugene provides nice taps from his drum set while Phil adds a playful bass groove throughout the song and all combine for a sound that resembles those of a beach dream.
“I told Matt one day ‘Let’s write a song named driving to Hawaii surfing down the street,’ then he made a full song like a day later and I was like okay let’s do that. I had no say in the song except ‘driving to Hawaii surfing down the street,’” Phil says.
All three guys are managing full time jobs, two band practice sessions a week at Eugene’s house, and playing at least one show a week. “It’s a balance between working 40 hours a week and finding the time and energy to play. The biggest struggle is the fact that we have full time jobs and finding balance between that,” Phil says.
Maybe having a full time job isn’t so bad since it’s helped influence some new songs they’re currently working on. “Eugene has been working at this place called Biscuits and Groovy and they play a lot of oldies and 70’s music and dance music so Eugene has been finding himself in love with that music lately so we’ve been trying to write a lot of songs more 70’s dance based,” Matt says.
I’ve had the pleasure seeing the band many times and every time they make the crowd laugh with their banter while providing a relaxing yet playful set. Summer Salt will have shows during South By Southwest in Austin where people from all over can catch their summer tunes.
