Introducing Sean Mcverry! He spent his childhood in a quiet, small-town in Connecticut, playing his mother’s piano to fill the time and now he's traveling around the nation playing rock music, so that's pretty cool!
As always for F&F Open Mic we asked Sean five of our favorite questions and we let him tell the story! Check out the questions below. For the best Open Mic experience make sure you listen to Sean's tracks while reading.
Overall, my music stems from observation of every day life. Especially living in a place with as much stimulus as New York; If you put yourself in the present and pay attention to all of the small interactions that are happening around you, it provides a wealth of inspiration for music. A few city blocks of New York can give you a pretty large picture of the human experience. So many of my songs are drawn out from snapshots of my life, singular moments that are elaborated on. Whether its the person who holds the subway door for you as you fly down the stairs, or the same bouncer that works outside the incredibly seedy forty second street strip club, these small micro-narratives are a glimpse at this unadulterated humanity, and this emotional scope that connects us all as human beings. At the end of the day, I’m not sure its entirely my story I’m interested in telling. I’m just a pretty normal guy that’s trying to understand the world and bring people together somehow. Music is just how I express it.
2) Who, if anyone, has been your biggest supporter/ mentor?
My family. I’ve been so fortunate to have my entire family behind me since day one. Which is such a rare thing, and I know how incredibly privileged I am to have that kind of support system. I have such an insane list of mentors and supporters thus far in my career, professors from my college that shifted my viewpoint, Elite, my producer and great friend who believed in the music at the very beginning and gave so much of himself and his talent to this project. However, I gotta give it to the fam for the number one spot, I’m lucky to have them all behind me.
3) Why did you decide to start a band together?
Well heres the thing. I decided to get into music because at it’s core it was a medium I felt I could really express myself, and saw it as a language that could be crafted and developed until it felt like it was an extension of myself. I saw the transformative quality of music as I got older, and saw how people can truly connect through it. I wanted to be a part of that. A part from that, performing is when I truly feel like one hundred percent myself.
As for the music business, not a huge fan. Theres a Hunter S Thompson quote I find myself going back to- “ The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free and good men die like dogs. There’s also a negative side”.
4) How do you plan to grow your popularity?
This has been and ever-evolving definition for me. Obviously I have certain benchmarks for where I would like to be in my career, whether its a specific venue or show (The Garden, Royal Albert Hall, Jools Holland, SNL etc) or just being able to live both in the pop and concert worlds of music as some of my musical role models have. I look at careers of people like Sufjan Stevens, Bjork, Dev Hynes, and David Byrne and see how they have been able to field careers writing great pop music, while also being able to branch out into other musical projects in film or concert dance or whatever the hell David Byrne is doing (he’s impossible to keep up with). I would like to be where some of these people are later down the line. That would be the ultimate place for me I think, to live and create freely.
5) If you could have a billboard anywhere on the planet where would it be and what would it say?
How about the middle of times square. Black billboard, huge white Futura font lettering (fonts are important) saying - “EVERYTHING IS GOING TO BE OKAY”.
that or a billboard at Niagara Falls (or any other natural wonder of the world) that says - “PUT YOUR PHONES AWAY”
