Described as "one of the most prominent bands in Iowa today" Halfloves has played with some blockbuster F&F favorites such as Manchester Orchestra, Foxygen, Misterwive.
As always for F&F Open Mic we asked the Halfloves five of our favorite questions and we let the band tell the story! Check out the questions below. For the best Open Mic experience make sure you listen to Halfloves tracks while reading.
1) What story are you trying to tell as a band?
Storytelling generally falls somewhere between personal stories about your own experiences and escaping into the lives of other people, places and situations to tell their stories through your own lens. We try to keep our story very personal and honest to who we are as people and a collective unit but also want to connect with and respect things that we don't totally understand or to which we don't naturally gravitate. Telling stories through music is both extremely intimate and personal but is ultimately useless if it doesn't connect with other people too.
2) Who, if anyone, has been your biggest supporter/ mentor?
Our band really took a new direction when we started working with our producer Brandon. We went into working with him with the general ambition of making an album and have come out on the other side with so much more knowledge and motivation than any of us were expecting. In May of 2014 we went into the studio for our first sessions with him which lasted 6 days. We planned a similar block of studio days for the following month and brought some other songs. After the first day, Brandon basically told us those songs weren't good enough and to go home and write better songs and then come back to him. Initially, we were all kinda bummed but after 6 months we came back to the studio with new material and I think that was one of the pivotal moments of making this new album because he knew we were serious about working hard and we knew he was right about taking more time to make music that didn't suck. Developing a mutual respect and connection with Brandon has been impactful to all of us in the band.
3) Why did you decide to start a band together?
We all probably have slightly different intentions and interests that motivate us to be in a band or pursue making music but there's definitely something special when enough of those motivations and general life situations converge and allow a group of people to make music together. Some of us have been friends since we were very young and most of us have also played music together in the past. I think one of the most important things about being a band is simply staying together and riding it out; working through the other life situations, supporting each other and also pushing each other to work hard for something we all love. The reward for being in a band or making music is held in the act of doing those things, having those related experiences and pieces of music forever.
4) How do you plan to grow your popularity?
So much of everything everyone does is largely out of any particular individual's control so when faced with broad big picture goals like growing our popularity we try to focus on the things we're the most in control of; simple but important things like practicing and writing songs, getting better at using our individual instruments and skill sets, managing our schedules and other areas of our lives, etc. Basically anything that better postures us in places where we can succeed as musicians and as a band. Like we mentioned before, making music is it's own reward but if we're afforded more of a spotlight and/or fans and income from music, those are all things that help us do what we love and are worth working hard for as well.
5) If you could have a billboard anywhere on the planet where would it be and what would it say?
We may have taken this question all too seriously but there's this new digital billboard in Times Square that's eight stories tall, covers an entire city block and has about 300,000 daily visitors so... that's the spot! Kanye has a knack for declaring the best albums of all time so maybe we could call in a favor and get him to appear on the billboard and declare our new album the greatest of all time. I don't know who could argue with that being the crux of our PR campaign - sure success!
